Reduce Waste INDEX | At School

Pack a No-Waste Lunch:
* Buy or make a reusable lunch box you can keep year after year. Use a thermos or water bottle instead of individual juice packs. Use plastic containers instead of plastic bags. Take only the food you will eat, eat the food you bring, and compost the food you don't eat.Use Reusable School Supplies:
* Buy a sturdy backpack that will last a long time, refillable pens and pencils, and other long-lasting reusable productsUse Less Paper:
* Use recycled paper and use both sides. Think before you print a document off your school computer, could you read it online instead or file it online for later reference? Because paper and packaging make up such a large part of our garbage, by using less paper you can reduce up to 40 percent of the trash that is thrown away.

Buy School Supplies Made from Recycled Materials:
* Look for paper, notebooks, plastic containers, and other supplies with the recycled logo. This label will also include a statement telling you what percent recycled materials were used in making this product. Remember, if you aren't buying recycled products, you aren't really recycling. When you recycle newspapers, school papers, plastic drink bottles and other such products, the companies who recycle them for you are also depending on you to take the next step by buying products that are made from recycled materials.
Take a Tour of the Flathead County Landfill and Compost Garden:
* Each spring The Waste Not Project offers free field trips for Flathead County schools. Students and educators learn hands-on about waste management, hazardous waste, recycling, composting, and worm composting. Call The Waste Not Project at 756-8993 for more information.
