 RECYCLE YOUR E-WASTE!

Did you know that electronics contain hundreds of different materials that can be both toxic but also of high value?  Gold, silver, copper, and platinum are valuable materials that can be recovered from electronic equipment, or e-waste.  Valley Recycling, in partnership with the Flathead County Solid Waste District,  the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, Citizens for a Better Flathead, and the Montana Conservation Corps offers a once-a-year, cost-saving collection program.  Pre-register by calling 257-4302.  This year's E-Waste event was Saturday, May 3rd from 9 am-2 pm at Valley Recycling, 1410 Hwy 2 W, Kalispell.  The event was extremely successful; the Flathead County residents recycled 19,134 pounds of electronics! For more information or a list of what kind of electronic waste can be recycled and their costs to be recycled, Click here. Call Valley Recycling at 257-2574 or the WasteNot Project at 756-8993 for additional questions.

DOES YOUR BUSINESS GENERATE HAZARDOUS WASTE?
In addition to the Electronic Equipment Recycling Event, the Flathead County Landfill is hosting the Sixth Annual Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Event, Friday, May 30, 8 am-5 pm all day.  Many businesses, educational institutions and governmental offices of all sizes generate hazardous waste on a regular basis but don’t realize it. If your business is listed in this table, you probably generate hazardous waste. To be absolutely sure, you can talk with a Waste Reduction Specialist. If a waste is determined to be hazardous, specific state rules apply to its management and disposal. Questions about a particular waste can be directed to Robert Reinke with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, 406-444-1435. For local expertise check listing in the yellow pages under “Environmental Consultants.” A consultant can advise you on cost effective ways to reduce your waste stream. The Sixth Annual Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Event offers county businesses an easy, legally compliant and cost effective way to dispose of hazardous wastes that many Flathead businesses generate on a regular basis on a small scale.  Look for warning words on the label to identify hazardous wastes including: Danger, Poison, Caution, Flammable, Caustic, or Hazardous.  Typical disposal costs for business-generated hazardous waste are greatly reduced by taking advantage of reduced group fees for small businesses at the annual Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Event.  The event will be held at the Flathead County Landfill on Hwy. 93, midway between Kalispell and Whitefish.  Please pre-register for this event by calling Veolia Environmental Services at 877-484-0129 x 102, by 5/28/08.  For a free information packet about hazardous waste and what you can do to reduce your waste, call the Waste Not Project at 756-8993.
